agutterfan This is the great album Vanessa has been promising for some time. A mature masterpiece of melody, literate lyrics, and poignant songwriting. The album grows as you listen and with each listen. Hard to choose a favourite, but check out the bookends for the quality on offer. Favorite track: What You Can't Outrun.

H.L. I discovered Vanessa Peters and this beautiful album on a long drive with my wife, checking out some new indie rock at Bandcamp. We immediately appreciated Vanessa's warm and clear voice, the catchiness, the variety in song dynamics and the unaffected atmosphere. Only three weeks later we got and took the chance to watch her live on stage, enjoyed a fine acoustic set and even shook hands after the gig. I think this album will be our companion for quite a while now. Check out the rocking "Lucky" or "Get started", the touching "Fight" or the melancholic "What you can't outrun". Favorite track: Lucky.

Leslie Shaw This one is especially timely. Our American difficulties have us second guessing ourselves daily. Vanessa's introspection is so relatable. Thank you for this record. Favorite track: Just One of Them.

Get Started 03:40
I tried to sleep but it wasn't dark enough I tried to read, I tried to write but there wasn't enough light I tried to meditate but couldn't still my thoughts I tried to turn it down a notch and found that I could not so get started while you are young cause it'll take 'til you are old get started while you are young it'll take 'til you are old it's such a subtle shift sometimes it takes years to get the gist of how it changed something so small caused the sequence of it all to start a slow unraveling so get started while you are young cause it'll take 'til you are old get started while you are young it'll take 'til you are old a map of every turn and twist a map of every sign you missed the sum of all your broken parts the sum of every jump gun start add it all up and you’ll find you needed every single second and there wasn’t enough time so get started while you are young cause it'll take 'til you are old get started while you are young it'll take 'til you are old

the road is just one long diversion a endless gravel coercion coaxing you to think melancholy thoughts leading you to distant places where you’ll see only strange faces and you could touch them if you'd just reach across ‘cause we've already come so far we're closer than you think we are and we could finish this but first we've gotta start before it falls apart the world we live in is so uncertain everyone I know is hurting most of us just trying to make it through the day caught up in a constant deadline we tell ourselves we're feeling fine as we fill up the hive mind with nothing much to say but we've already come so far we're closer than you think we are and we could finish this but first we've gotta start before it falls apart reach out and grab a hand squeeze it tightly as you can open your eyes, open your heart ‘cause we've already come so far it’s closer than you think we are and we could finish this but first we've gotta start before it falls apart

Fight 04:24
I feared failure for a long time I suppose that I still do I just ran out of armor, got tired of being poked and examined submitted for approval but always found wanting and I'm tired of always selling myself of putting my best foot forward all the time the rabbit I've been chasing is still farther away, my shoes have come loose and I am tired. but I never seem to remember why I'm cut down by their words I don't know how to keep my defenses up I should be braver and I know that it's absurd and lately I've just been in the corner licking my wounds every night
get out there and fight girl, don't be afraid to bleed
crawl back towards the light don't be afraid to show you need
smile less and show more bared teeth
get out there and fight girl bring ‘em to their knees. and I always had a hard time making leaps even as a kid I'd spend hours with my toes curled around the edge, terrified of being pushed, and screwing up all my courage
and only when the others had grown bored and tired of waiting the fear of being left alone
would push me towards the water, screaming all the way down but it was never that bad in the end. but I never seem to remember that part of the lesson never quite sunk in and I don't know what I'm so afraid of now I don't know what I was so afraid of then. and lately I've just been in the corner licking my wounds every night
get out there and fight girl, don't be afraid to bleed
crawl back towards the light don't be afraid to show you need
smile less and show more bared teeth
get out there and fight girl bring ‘em to their knees. get out there and fight girl bring ‘em to their knees

This Riddle 03:44
I woke up resurrecting demons smothered by the details we push way down they always claw back to the surface dead weight I can't drown and I'm still clinging to the driftwood floating past all the past I can't live down surrounded by every lie I ever sold you struggling to get to solid ground a head full of all the bits I saved and all the times I piled on the blame can't let it go, I’m running out of space paralyzed by the choices I made like how we never used that great front porch it had a tree growing straight through the middle and you were a terrific problem solver but not enough to crack this riddle a head full of all the bits I saved and all the times I piled on the blame can't let it go, I’m running out of space paralyzed by the choices I made I woke up resurrecting demons smothered by the details we push way down they always claw back to the surface dead weight I can't drown

lying in the dark whispering foxhole prayers when all seems lost if you could just make this one thing happen just this one more time, what would it cost? and I know that this seems cheap and easy for me to come crawling to you at the end of the line but I swear it's never been harder for me to pray than it was this time foxhole prayers the sky falling all around surrounded by this fear please don't let us down to really give it over, you've got to let it go ‘cause otherwise you're still holding on and empty hands are the hardest thing to still when your hope is this far gone foxhole prayers the sky falling all around surrounded by this fear please don't let us down we're all just children hurried out of school holding hands and told to keep our heads low and all of this just makes me weary the woman in the backseat screaming yes sir yes sir yes sir can't anybody hear me? foxhole prayers the sky falling all around surrounded by this fear please don't let us down please don’t let us down please don’t let us down

High on my perception of others' misdirection I sit here in the dark, judging quietly America once meant something to me home of brave and of the free where if you worked hard, we all believed, things would go your way eventually but that ragged dream is full of holes poked through and the threads left behind don't hang true and I am deafened by my silence in the face of so much need I thought I was a honest man but truth be told I'm just one of them I came out east to make myself in this giant lonely city bursting at the seams with swarms of lonely people and piles of lonely dreams and I remembered what I told you as I left the last thing that was said a bad driver's only safe ’til she meets another head to head and our ragged dream is full of holes poked through and the words left behind don't ring true and I am deafened by my silence in the face of so much need I thought I was a honest man but truth be told I'm just one of them we all get caught up in celebrity pulled out of reality 'til we can't tell what is real and what is not and I am torn between two versions of me one is rich, the other's free but you were worth much more than this much more than them and all their carelessness and this ragged dream is full of holes poked through and the threads left behind don't hang true and I am deafened by my silence in the face of so much need I thought I was a honest man but truth be told I'm just one of them

the war was done and money flowed like black oil from the ground there was a tempest in a teapot dome but it didn't make a sound in every town you could find a talking head to tell you how it'd be how america could really turn a profit if we'd only set her free but there was this carnival barker we were all warned about they told us to steer clear of him when he came to our town you'll get a circus, history told us, if you vote for a clown but the grifters pitched their tents and the good word got drowned out so maybe round the edges he was a little rough but he had a pitch and he said his lines and talked real tough and they put our country up for sale, waved a flag and called it truth now I lie awake at night wondering what we'll do ‘cause there is this carnival barker we were all warned about they told us to steer clear of him when he came to our town you'll get a circus, history told us, if you vote for a clown but the grifters pitched their tents and the good word got drowned out playing both sides perfectly until they had us beat now they're filling coffers in their towers and taking down main street and there was this carnival barker we were all warned about they told us to steer clear of him when he came to our town you'll get a circus, history told us, if you vote for a clown but the grifters pitched their tents and the good word got drowned out
9.
Trolls 02:58
they're lurking under bridges breeding in the dark feeding indecision weakening your heart they’re counting on your kindness to catch you off your guard raising up an army of trolls in the backyard and the battle lines are clearly drawn you know which side you're on but it'll take a long long time to beat them and you know which path to choose you know the bullies always lose but it'll take a long long time to beat them a long long time to beat them it’s like a poisoned dart straight into your heart and with every beat you feel it sting inside the situation’s dire the wizard sold us out everything’s on fire we’re burning up with doubt and the battle lines are clearly drawn you know which side you're on but it'll take a long long time to beat them and you know which path to choose you know the bullies always lose but it'll take a long long time to beat them a long long time to beat them
10.
the wreckage is all cleared up now there's nothing left of the scene and order's been restored the fury died down quickly, no longer paid any heed and all of this tragedy's got us bored but I'm left cleaning up the mess they made of you and asking what I could've done if there was something I could’ve said but in the end you're what you can't outrun you were living in the past with no idea it was never coming back it must’ve seemed so close there at the end as you watched it slip through the cracks and I'm left cleaning up the mess they made of you and asking what I could've done if there was something I could’ve said but in the end you're what you can't outrun I guess in the end you’re what you can’t outrun the careless ones who trashed your heart they smashed up everything then headed home now I'm left cleaning up the mess they made of you and asking what I could've done if there was something I could’ve said but in the end you're what you can't outrun and in the end it’s the lies you can’t outrun I guess in the end you're what you can't outrun I guess in the end you’re what you can’t outrun I guess in the end you’re what you can’t outrun

about

--- Critical acclaim for "Foxhole Prayers" ---

⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Bolshy, blazing letters from the new front line." - MOJO

"A brilliant songwriter with a literary quality that makes her songs comparable to short stories, Vanessa Peters is Dallas’s Aimee Mann." - GuideLive

“A superb, socially-conscious album for our times” - Americana UK

"Her rich, seductive vocals remind me of Lucy Kaplansky and Canada’s under-appreciated Lynn Miles, and her instantly accessible songs—a mix of gorgeous ballads and well-hooked rockers—come loaded with pensive, clever lyrics. The instrumentation, which includes acoustic and electric guitars, mellotron, and drum machines, seems redolent of the great solo albums by Crowded House’s Neil Finn." - No Depression

"True to form, Peters combines pop, indie rock and lyrical storytelling to give us a sound that feels simultaneously fresh and familiar." - Glide

"A 'cozy coffeehouse feel-good,' Foxhole Prayers drips with magical, classic-style singer / songwriter allure." - Ink19

"...imaginative and metaphor-filled songs that inspire listeners and fellow songwriters alike." - Cowboys and Indians
