about

This was my first full-length record after my EP, Mirabilandia, was released in 2002. It's a first effort in every possible way - it was, I believe, the first record that my producers had ever made, and my first full-length, and the first time the graphic designer I worked with had ever done CD art. The whole process was new to all of us, and in a lot of ways, it shows. Why wouldn't it?

And yet. I have such a soft spot for a lot of these songs. I had really high hopes that so many things would work out - "the music thing," whatever that meant, was brand-new to me at the time. I had only been writing songs for a year or two, and only performing live for about as long. I was naive and hopeful and optimistic in the way that only a 22-year-old can be. These are songs that only naiveté could permit - a 6-minute song about missing someone half a world away, another 6-minute song about fearing my love to be unrequited... an entire album's worth of self-doubt and heartache with no edit button in sight. These were the days before I began to write in metaphor or even dreamed of a concept album; these were dear diary days, and I'm okay with that.

We all have to start somewhere.
